Yue Opera The Moonlit Spring by Shaoxing Keqiao Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Art Inheritance Center

Chinese Opera

Based on historical accounts of Fan Zhongyan’s exile in Yuezhou, the Yue Opera The Moonlit Spring follows his efforts to reform bureaucracy, open the granaries to provide relief for the people, and outwit powerful treacherous officials. The drama sets integrity against corruption, loyalty against betrayal, and ideals against reality. Using the “moon” and “spring” as central themes, it combines Yue opera with local art forms such as Shaoxing Lianhualao and expands its expressive space through moving screens and changing light. Its poetic narrative portrays Fan’s steadfast moral conviction and his readiness to plead the people’s cause, demonstrates how traditional Chinese opera can find contemporary artistic expression, and gives this historical subject a distinct human warmth and present-day resonance.
