Marking the 120th anniversary of Yue opera, the Shanghai Yue Opera Art Preservation and Transmission Institute presents the newly created mythological drama Mount Hua: A Legend of Love and Deliverance, also known as Lotus Lantern, which will receive its premiere at this year’s China Shanghai International Arts Festival. Drawing on a beloved folk legend and taking reference from the Peking opera Lotus Lantern and the Yue opera Splitting the Mountain to Rescue Mother, it reimagines the legend of the Third Holy Mother and Chenxiang and their unrelenting pursuit of freedom, familial love, and faith. While preserving the essence of Yue opera’s arts of singing, speech, acting, and combat, the production incorporates AI and multimedia technology to create an imaginative dialogue between traditional theater and the contemporary stage.
