Adapted from the classic film of the same name by the German master filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder, The Marriage of Maria Braun is directed by Schaubühne artistic director Thomas Ostermeier. Through the turbulent life of an ordinary woman, the production reflects the desire, trauma, and social transformation of West Germany’s post-war ‘economic miracle.’Remaining true to the spirit of the film, Ostermeier weaves cinematic language onto the stage through playful performance, movie-esque theatrical space and strongly rhythmic narrative. Wandering between comedy and tragedy, this work breathes new life into the classic and once again demonstrates the distinctive style that the Schaubühne is known for in contemporary theater production.
