This is the first time for Beijing People’s Art Theatre to create a small-theater production of Hamlet, reinterpreting Shakespeare’s classic with an entirely youth cast. Moving beyond the traditional tale of a prince’s revenge, this production turns its attention to the uncertainties of growing up and the spiritual quests of young people today. Performers take on multiple roles to reshape the relationships among the characters, with rapid transitions demonstrating the complex links between identity, the self, and truth. Incorporating a play-in-play, audience interaction, live music, and other theatrical devices, this production brings a distinctly contemporary perspective to the classic text through a stage language that feels both modern and playful, offering a boldly experimental theatrical experience.
