Premiered in 1959, the dance drama Dagger Society is a classic in the history of Chinese ethnic dance drama. Set against the 1853 Small Swords Society Uprising in Shanghai, it recreates a heroic epic of the Chinese people’s resistance against imperialist and feudal oppression. It is widely regarded as one of the foundational works of Chinese ethnic dance theatre. The new production by the Shanghai Opera House, preserves the classic’s spirit and distinctive artistic characteristics of Chinese dance theatre, while revitalizing its historical narrative through contemporary dance vocabulary and stagecraft. With richer choreographic expression and visual language, the production demonstrates the enduring vitality of Chinese dance drama and the depth of Chinese cultural heritage, imbuing this classic work with new meaning for the contemporary era.
