Experimental Sichuan Opera Furong Grand Hotel
Commissioned by the stage performing arts section of the Rising Artists’ Works (R.A.W.!) programme, Furong Grand Hotel is an experimental Sichuan opera theatre piece developed by the Drama Department’s 'Chuan Yi' project at Sichuan Vocational College of Art. Drawing spiritual inspiration from Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Person of Szechwan, the work follows a parabolic journey in which immortals accompany Old Zhang, a traditional dough figurine craftsman, in their search for good and evil in the human world. The production reimagines ensemble theatre through the transformative motif of 'dough figures coming to life,' blending Sichuan opera traditions with absurdist parody to construct a charged and dynamic narrative space. By visualising collective frenzy and real-world dilemmas, the piece weaves philosophical reflection into a uniquely Sichuan-style expression—prompting the audience to confront the cost and value of goodness in a complex world.
