Hong Kong Ballet Carmina Burana with The Last Song

The performance of Carmina Burana features a double bill of Carmina Burana and The Last Song, co-presented by the Hong Kong Ballet and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra—both pieces recipients of the 24th Hong Kong Dance Awards. Both works draw inspiration from iconic artistic intellectual properties. Carmina Burana is based on Carl Orff’s celebrated cantata, which sets medieval Latin poems to music. The Last Song draws inspiration from Oscar Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose. Carmina Burana is structured in three parts, centered on themes from medieval poetry, while The Last Song explores the tension between “idealism and desire,” using character interactions to reflect on the concept of beauty. During the performance, a nine-metre-high platform encircles the stage to evoke the atmosphere of a monastery, with over a hundred singers performing live—creating a truly breathtaking spectacle.
