Hamlet by Schaubühne
The German Schaubühne’s Hamlet, directed by the company’s artistic director Thomas Ostermeier, is a pioneering take on the classic play. Ostermeier uses confrontational physical movements, passionate language, and rich stage imagery, complemented by multimedia projections and explosive rock music, to offer a radical reinterpretation of the tragic hero. The brooding prince is replaced by a bold, humorous, and sometimes unsettling Hamlet. Over 20 characters are portrayed by just six actors, highlighting Hamlet’s struggle between reality and self-awareness through constant role changes.
