With a history dating back to 1747, the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus is one of the largest public theaters in Germany. Upholding a spirit of artistic reform and innovation, it has long served as a central experimental ground for German-language avant-garde drama, continuously breaking the boundaries between artistic disciplines. While nurturing pioneering theatrical works, the theater also focuses on contemporary adaptations of classical repertoire, breathing new life into traditional art. Its program includes traditional plays, contemporary and experimental performances, as well as interactive works. With its rich and diverse repertoire, the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus has become one of Europe’s most influential theaters. Operating across three locations with six stages, it presents different performances daily. Its resident ensemble comprises over 40 actors, producing approximately 25 world premieres each year. Since Wilfried Schulz became artistic director in the 2016-2017 season, the theater has gradually opened up to the urban public. Today, it hosts over 900 performances and events annually, attracting around 250,000 visitors.
