Shanghai Dance Theatre

Shanghai Song and Dance Ensemble is a professional performing arts company specializing in dance and vocal music, established in June 1979 and restructured as a state-owned enterprise in November 2009. Since its founding, the ensemble has built a rich repertoire of artistic works, including over ten major productions such as the dance dramas Golden Dances and Silver Ornaments, The Sparkling Red Star, Wild Zebra, The Crested Ibis, and The Eternal Wave; dozens of full-length performance programs including the Chinese drum show Sound of the Dragon, dance anthologies Garden of Fragrance, The Dances We Have Danced, On the Road, Heaven, Earth and Man, and vocal concerts Song in the Heart, Riding the Wings of Song, and Spring Rendezvous; as well as over one hundred dance pieces including Root Carving, Contemporary Rhythm, Deep Night, Gorgeous Scenery, and The Earth.


The ensemble has received numerous national and professional honors, including the "Five-One Project" Excellence Award, the Wenhua Grand Prize of the China Arts and Culture Government Awards, the National Stage Art Excellence Project, the Golden Lotus Award at the China Dance "Lotus Cup" Competition, the Shanghai Magnolia Performing Arts Award, and multiple gold medals in international vocal competitions. The company boasts a strong artistic roster, featuring Principal Dancers Zhu Jingjie and Wang Jiajun (holding the honorific title of "Rongdian" — equivalent to Artist of Distinction), Principal Dancers Hou Tengfei, Wang Jing, Bi Ran, and Yu Tingting, as well as acclaimed young vocalists Xu Qing and Xi Yanjuan. The ensemble has toured the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and other countries, as well as Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, with works such as Golden Dances and Silver Ornaments, Wild Zebra, and The Crested Ibis gaining international acclaim.
