Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Theatre is a professional performing arts institution under the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, and a highly renowned Yue opera company both domestically and internationally. In 2019, it adopted a system of president accountability under the leadership of the Party Committee, with two major performance entities under its umbrella: the Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe and the Zhejiang Yue Opera Troupe, which respectively carry forward the traditions of "all-female Yue opera" and "mixed-gender performances," forming a complementary structure enriched by a constellation of distinguished artists.
The Zhejiang Yue Opera Troupe was founded in 1949 and is known for its down-to-earth, rigorous, and refined creative style, and was once honored as one of the "Eight Red Banners" in national theatre for its works on contemporary themes. The Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe was founded in 1984 and pioneered a "poetic Yue opera" aesthetic, distinguished by its unique stage artistry. Together, the two troupes have won 18 major national awards including the Wenhua Grand Prize, the "Five-One Project" Award, and the National Stage Art Excellence Project, along with 23 "Flying Apsaras" Awards for television productions, accumulating over 200 awards across various categories. The theatre boasts a wealth of artistic talent, with nine Plum Blossom Award winners, five recipients of the Wenhua Performance Award, five Magnolia Award winners, five Golden Laurel Award winners, and nine recipients of the New Song Plan Gold Award, continuously injecting vibrant energy into the preservation and evolution of Yue opera.
