National Theatre of China

The National Theatre of China is a national-level performing arts institution directly under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China. It was founded in Yan'an in 1941. After the founding of the People's Republic, through the merger of the China Youth Art Theatre and the Central Experimental Theatre, it was officially established as the National Theatre of China in 2001. The theatre boasts a wealth of artistic resources and a distinguished theatrical heritage. Several generations of theatre pioneers—represented by Ouyang Yuqian, Liao Chengzhi, Wu Xue, Shu Qiang, Jin Shan, and Sun Weishi—laid a solid and profound foundation for the theatre's birth, development, legacy, and innovation.

Committed to creating and presenting high-quality, high-calibre dramatic works—both Chinese and international, classical and contemporary—the National Theatre of China places great emphasis on artistic excellence and talent development, and is home to a large number of distinguished stage directors and performers. The theatre actively explores new markets, continuously innovates in creative expression, and serves as a home for dedicated theatre artists.
