Medium-Length Pingtan Shanghai Wonton by Shanghai Pingtan Troupe

Shanghai Wonton is the latest literary IP adaptation by Shanghai Pingtan Troupe, based on JIN Ying's novel of the same name. Produced by GAO Bowen and scripted and starred by veteran playwright XU Huixin, this work continues the troupe's recent focus on local realist themes, exploring Shanghai-style neighborhood stories that examine contemporary family relationships through the symbolic thread of homemade wontons.

The story follows retired father Old WANG as he shuttles between Fuzhong Market and People's Square matchmaking corner, seeking happiness for his son. Performed in the melodious Wu dialect with traditional "storytelling, humor, singing and acting" techniques, this production elevates Shanghai alleyway vignettes into an urban poetic blend of humor and warmth.
