The original The Poetic Dance Nine Songs is inspired by Qu Yuan’s work Jiu Ge. The production draws from the ancient deities in the text, such as “Dong Jun” and “Yun Zhong Jun,” “Shan Gui” and “He Bo,” “Xiang Jun” and “Xiang Furen,” and “Da Siming” and “Shao Siming,” forming pairs that represent oppositions. These pairings symbolize the four dimensions of “heaven,” “earth,” “humankind,” and “gods,” which are brought to life as a stage tableau. Directed by young dancer HU Yang and collaborating with several accomplished creative artists, the piece uses dance to embody deities and deities to reflect humanity, infusing traditional beauty with a contemporary interpretation, evoking a spiritual resonance through Eastern philosophical thought.
