BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF : The original puppet stage production The Last Warrior Elephant is co-produced by SMG Performing Arts Group (SMG Live) and Shanghai Puppet Troupe. It was adapted from Shen Shixi's novella of the same name, which was selected into the fifth-grade Chinese textbook This legendary story retells the encounter and companionship between young elephant Ga Suo and villager Bo Nongding at the Yunnan borderline before, during and after the wartime. The stage production of The Last Warrior Elephant has been conceived for four years from the idea of adaption to the establishment of the company. SMG Live and Shanghai Puppet Troupe have assembled the most outstanding artists in the industry with remarkable performing talents and accomplished executive production teams to create and ensure an energetic platform, where the artists can present their imaginations visually. The play is jointly created by both local and international teams, using the latest multimedia technology to accentuate the visual imagery and sound. The Last Warrior Elephant is directed by the esteemed Chinese theatre director He Nian from Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, with multimedia design from the world-renowned British company 59 Productions in association with the distinguished set designer Shen Li from Shanghai Theatre Academy and light designer Ren Dongsheng from The Central Academy of Drama. Composer Peng Fei (China Taiwan Golden Melody Award winner) teamed up with sound engineer Lu Xiaoxing (Grammy Award winner) to produce the original score of the show with Chinese Dai ethnic features, benchmarking the top technical and producing level. In addition, as China's first modern puppet production, The Last Warrior Elephant combines traditional puppets skills with advanced technologies, aiming to visualize the wish for a harmonious relationship between human and nature while breaking the cliché. By the directing of Shanghai Puppet Troupe leader He Xiaoqiong, the 1:1 giant Asian elephant puppets, which were independently designed and developed by Shanghai Puppet Troupe for a year and a half, are an unparalleled innovation of traditional Shanghai-style puppets. The giant elephant puppets with a maximum height of 3.8 meters on stage is operated by three actors simultaneously. Elephant Ga Suo can flash his eyes, swing his nose back and forth and even sprinkle water. Audience can observe the muscles structure and skin texture of the elephant clearly under the light. Not to mention the actors give the puppet life through their control of breathing and movement on an unprecedented scale. On November 3, 2019, The Last Warrior Elephant was invited to join the 20th Shanghai International Arts Festival in Shanghai Oriental Art Center, and it was invited to open the 6th Shanghai International Puppet Art Festival, with a special committee mention of "Golden Magnolia Award". From January 10 to January 13, 2019, The Last Warrior Elephant was invited by the National Theatre in Beijing for 5 shows in a row. The holographic audio and visual experience has won the praise of experts and audience in the industry. On March 22, 2019 The Last Warrior Elephant was invited to give a theme night performance during the 29th "White Magnolia Art Awards in Shanghai Grand Theatre. On May 15, 2019, The Last Warrior Elephant was the first to perform on the stage of the 12th China Art Festival organized by the Ministry of culture and tourism of China. It has once again met with the Shanghai audience at the Majestic Theatre with its sophisticated production and breath-taking audio and video presentation, winning the highly approval in and outside of the industry.
