The original London West End musical The Last Five Years is a representative work by three-time Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown and is considered one of the most classic two-person musicals in history. It previously won the New York Drama Desk Award for Best Songwriting for a Musical. The touring version is based on the London West End Garrick Theatre production. The musical's unique feature is its use of a cross-narrative structure. The male and female protagonists each have their narrative timelines. The male protagonist's narrative is linear, starting from their love story, progressing to marriage, and ending with their separation. In contrast, the female protagonist's narrative is reversed, beginning with their separation, then going back to the height of their love, and finally arriving at the moment of heartbreak. The only time the two characters meet in the entire musical is when they decide to get married.
