Roots was created by 1927, a pioneering British theatre company. The work draws inspiration from "The Aarne index", a collection of folk tales housed in the British Library. Utilizing a combination of music, theater, and projected animation, 1927 brings to life thirteen ancient folk tales. The title story, which serves as the finale, revolves around two siblings planning to escape their burdensome mother, only to awaken and discover that they are permanently and intricately linked to their mother through colossal umbilical tree roots. With a live score featuring elements like Peruvian prayer boxes, donkey jaws, violins, and musical saws, Roots enhances the enchanting eccentricity of the entire production. Playfully exploring the narratives of the past and how they might shape the stories of our future, Roots invites the audience to contemplate these themes in a light-hearted manner.
