BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF : Sat|10/20|19:30|60 mins Sun|10/21|16:00,19:30|60 mins Mon|10/22|15:00,19:30|60 mins Black Box Theatre, Shanghai Theatre Academy Great Volume Song of the Bai People is a form of storytelling and is the intangible cultural heritage of Dali Prefecture, Yunnan province. This art form got matured during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) but gradually declined afterwards. In this work, Great Volume Song of the Bai People is combined with modern drama, physical theatre, and modern puppetry. The plot is based on the story of two village gods “Baijie” and “Lord of East Mountain” who are a loving couple in Benzhuism, a unique indigenous religion of the Bai People that worship local gods. The story develops from the wrong “shoes” the couple is wearing, exploring the philosophical question of freedom and bondage in a marriage from a contemporary perspective.
