Genre(s): Opera.
GROUP:WANG Shiru
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF : Fri-Sat|10/19-10/20|19:15|60 mins Sun|10/21|14:00,19:15 |60 mins Duanjun Theatre, Shanghai Theatre Academy The libretto of this work is adapted from The Painted Skin, a short story by Pu Songling, writer of the Qing Dynasty. The story’s mysterious but profound plot and strong moral message have made it a classic. This version seeks to interpret Pu’s story, from a contemporary perspective, by unveiling the hidden message of the story that draws an reflection on reality and humanity, exploring eternal themes such as contradiction between individual’s existence and morality, desire, temptation, sacrifice, and question of choice. Chinese elements are embodied in both music and libretto while physical movements are integrated with signing in a profound way. On these two basis, we hope to revive this classic story on stage through bold innovation in the form of classical Western opera.
