Yueju Opera "The Butterfly Lovers" by Shanghai Yueju Opera Theatre



The Shanghai Yueju Opera Theatre's original production "The Butterfly Lovers", which is known as the Chinese Romeo and Juliet among foreign audience, has been universally acknowledged as one of the four Yueju opera classics since its debut in 1950's.

To celebrate the Theatre's 50th anniversary, the production will be presented with a new vision in hopes of inheriting and enriching the traditional treasure. While keeping the original script essence and classical arias, the new version highlights the sworn love between Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai in a more romantic and poetic stage style. The music and choreography are rearranged by integrating folk and modern elements. The enjoyable set designing keeps pace with the change of the characters fate by switch of the scenery of the four seasons. Zhang Ruihong, one of the most favored female-play-male artist of Fan (Fan Ruijuan) School, and Chen Ying of Fu (Fu Quanxiang) School will cooperate in characterizing the Lovers.
