Under the joint initiative of the city of Biarritz and the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the Malandain  Ballet  Biarritz was created in 1998 under the leadership of Thierry Malandain. Since their foundation Ballet  Biarritz became one of the most important cultural institutes in the Aquitaine region.

The  particularity  of  Malandain  Ballet  Biarritz  is  that it  is  made  up  of  22  permanent  dancers trained  in  classical  technique  and  whose  expression  in Thierry  Malandain’s  choreographies is contemporary.  Today Malandain Ballet Biarritz is one of Europe’s most widely seen companies with 80 000 spectators per season and almost 100 performances per year, including a third abroad. 

The repertory of the company is mostly from Thierry Malandain himself but he also invites regularly foreign choreographers. Ballet Biarritz performs in France and other parts of the world like the USA, China and the Middle East. Malandain  Ballet  Biarritz is eager to have a close relationship with the audience and offers workshops as well as presentations for the dance loving youth and the grown-ups.
