I, Hamlet by Zhang Jun Kunqu Studio

I, Hamlet is adapted from Shakespeare's Hamlet, and adopts the way of Kun Opera monologue, which is one actor or actress playing several roles. I, Hamlet not only interprets the story of Hamlet itself, but also digs more about Hamlet's inner world--—a world full of intense fights of light and dark, life and death, revenge and love. With the unique understanding and interpretation of the masterpiece, the production team attempts to practice the clash and blend of Chinese and Western art from cultural connotation to forms.

This is the second collaboration between Zhang Jun (the actor), Li Xiaoping (Director) and Luo Zhou( Screenwriter) after the success of the contemporary opera A Moonlit Night on the Spring River, and once again this is based on the traditional arts and seeks contemporary expressions of deep exploration.

Director Li Xiaoping said, “In this story, the core is all the time around the juxtaposition of Chinese and Western literature, so that it can be fully reflected. Our pursuit is to show a dialogue between both cultures instead of only telling a complete story of Hamlet”.
