Fujian Culture Week

Fujian Culture Week

Duration:October 25-October 29

The Province of Fujian, located at the core of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, is one of the pioneers for development of One Belt and One Road. Fujian Culture Week will be organized during the arts festival to showcase major “intangible cultural heritage” in Fujian including Nanyin (South Tune), Min Opera and puppet drama with unique local features in forms of stage performing or outdoor performing.

The program Dream of the Maritime Silk Road by Fujian Provincial Opera and Dance Drama Theatre presents the audience the navigation dream of two generations of a family living in Quanzhou, Fujian in ancient times, and the touching stories occurring during their voyage. The drama is rich in cultural elements of south Fujian and at the same time is full of local customs in countries and regions alongside the Maritime Silk Road, integrating both Chinese and overseas cultures, and creating series of picturesque and meaningful images of dance and music.

The program Double-Butterfly Fan is a novel drama delicately developed by Fujian Provincial Min Opera Theatre. It is a drama featuring historical costumes and moral values. The drama, presented in an integrated manner of the two local drama types including Rulin and Pingjiang, shows the people’s new pursuits for drama quality and aesthetic values in this new age.

The program Phoenix Seeking A Mate by Quanzhou Normal University is a creative work that is different from the traditional rigid performing style but gets other performing styles integrated, interpreting the traditional art of Nanyin in a contemporary aesthetic way, and showcasing the unique beauties and instruments of Nanyin.

The puppet drama Chinese Orphan by Quanzhou Puppet Troupe is the first one of its kind featuring the historical stories rather than traditional children or legendary stories, wishing to inherit the traditional arts of types of roles including Sheng (young male role), Dan (female role), Jing (painted face role), Mo (middle-aged or senior male role) and Chou (clown role) in the puppet drama.
