1 Huju Opera Lane Prime Minister by Shanghai Opera Troupe of Changning

Founded by famous Huju opera actor Gu Yuezhen in 1949, Shanghai Opera Troupe of Changning District has created and performed many excellent operas. Lane Prime Minister reflects some of the hot issues and conflicts in residential communities nowadays, as it tells a tale of how Pan Yaping, a Party Secretary of a neighborhood committee, solved the problem of water quality for her neighborhood. It connects people and families of different fates and different stories to display the life in modern residential communities full of Shanghai local features.  It also portrays the touching image of a grass-root carder who goes to everybody’s home, knows everybody’s situation, solves everybody’s problem and warm’s everybody’s heart. The starring actress  is Chen Suping.

2 Modern Henan Opera Women in Mount Wangwu by Jiyuan Drama Art Center

Venue: Shanghai Arts Theatre

Jiyuan Drama Art Center, first founded in 1984, finally developed to current scale in 2012. Modern Henan Opera Women in Mount Wangwu is based on a true story of Caiyun, who lived at the foot of Wangwu Mountain.  Caiyun’s husband Qingshan died after the project payment was stolen by the accountant Ma Yutang. Caiyun, a woman with conscience, struggled on the hard way of earning and repaying. The drama moves the audience by the emotion and sets an ordinary woman in Mount Wangwu as the example of kindness and rings the alarm to the evil. The drama is directed by Zhang Ping, and starred by Liu Wenhui, Li Jia, Li Zhihuo, etc.

3 Concert for Chinese Local Opera Selections by SMEG Chinese Folk Music Orchestra

Venue: Shanghai Concert Hall

In order to promote the outstanding Chinese folk and opera music, facilitate the development of Chinese traditional opera music, SMEG Chinese Folk Music Orchestra stages a pure Chinese traditional opera music concert,  including music ofvarious kinds of operas such as Beijing opera, Kun opera, Yue opera, Hu opera, Huai opera, Pingtan, and Shaanxi opera, played in the way of traditional Chinese music. The invited composers include Jin Fuzai, Xu Zhiyuan, He Zhanhao and Zhou Chenglong. They created for this concert such excellent works as Overture to Beauty of Shenjiang Music, Spring Coming in Huai Tunes, both for Chinese orchestra,as well as Old Tunes for suona oboe and percussions.

4 Shanxi Opera On the Shangma Street by Taiyuan Experimental Shanxi Opera Company

Taiyuan Experimental Shanxi Opera Company, the former Taiyuan Experimental Shanxi Opera Troupe, was founded in 1961 and has developed into an excellent troupe with a strong lineup, a complete range of roles, a lot of famous artists, and rich repertoire. The opera On the Shangma Street was created by five state first-class actors in the Experimental Group One of Taiyuan Shanxi Opera Art Research Academy, telling a story happened on the eve of  Taiyuan’s liberation by the Chinese People's Liberation Army. By depicting the life of several households living in a quadrangle on the Shangma Street, the drama reflects the historical image at the turn between the old and the new era. The scriptwriter is Zhao Aibin, and director is Lei Shouzheng. It is starred by state first-class actor Liu Jianwei, Xie Tao, and Wu Yunhua, who is the Shanxi Apricot Blossom Performance Prize winner.

5 Han Opera Feign Madness in Palace by Wuhan Han Opera Theater

Han Opera Feign Madness in Palace is an original adapted traditional opera created by Wuhan Han Opera Theater after their successful production of the grand original historical play Wang Zhaojun. Feign Madness in Palace is adapted from Beijing opera A Sword and classic Han opera Feign Madness in Palace in Chen (Bohua) style. The main plot numbers includes Call a Stag a Horse, Marriage Uniting Kuang and Zhao Families, Steal Sword. Keeping the traditional essence, the opera emphasizes the psychological process of the heroine from an obedient girl to a rebellious woman. The opera is written by the state first-class scriptwriter Zheng Huaixing, directed by the well-known opera director Shi Yukun, and the heroine Zhao Yanrong is played by Wang Li, the excellent young actress of Han Opera and  fifth generation successor of Master Chen Bohua.

6 Yunnan Opera Water Grass Wilderness by Yuxi Yunnan Opera Theater

Founded in 1952, Yuxi Yunnan Opera Theater is one of the state intangible cultural heritage protection units. Yunnan opera Water Grass Wilderness starts from the contradiction between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. With wonderful conception, elegant stage show, powerful characteristic tunes of Yunnan opera and strong local flavor which is sometimes soft and charming, sometimes pathetic and touching , the opera presented the process from family gossip to the salvation of the soul, from the realism to the surreal imagination, from the small household affairs to the modern discussion of ego and human relationship. Water Grass Wilderness gives full reins to the artistic characteristics of the Yuannan Opera, and structures the brand new stage vocabulary. The drama is directed by Xiong Yuanwei, starred by  actor Lin Yuantao, etc.

7 Beijing Opera The Golden Cangue by Chongqing Beijing Opera, Co. Ltd.

Chongqing Beijing Opera, Co. Ltd. (formerly known as Chongqing Beijing Opera Troupe) was one of the most famous professional Beijing Opera troupes in China. , It boasts numerous famous actors and actresses, such asfive “tigers” in Li family, three talents in Hui family, Shen Fucun, Zhu Fuxia, and Cheng Lianqun, etc.. The Beijing Opera The Golden Cangue is adapted from the same story written by the noted novelist Zhang Ailing, telling the psychological experience of Cao Qixiao, born in a small merchant family, changing from a maiden to a grieving woman. This opera gathered top creation team and won many prizes in the 12th China Opera Art Festival in 2011. It is directed by  Li Liuyi, state first-class director from the Beijing People's Art Theatre and starred by Cheng Lianqun and Zhang Junqiang.

8 Huangmei Opera Once Upon A Time in Huizhou by Anhui Zaifen Huangmei Opera Culture and Art Co. Ltd.

Instead of following traditional Chinese opera’s slow pace and monotonous narration, the original grand Huangmei opera Once Upon A Time in Huizhou draws lessons from the way of narration of Hollywood movies and employs modern stage art concept to present movie-like tensions and delicacy as well as shocking effect of a live opera show. The opera tells a story about a smart, diligent and well-educated Huizhou girl Shu Xiang in late Qing Dynasty, who was abandoned by love, life and society due to the chaos caused by officials and bandits and social unrest. The ups and downs of its plot and the pure and simple language show us the all-around excellent art characteristic of Huaimei opera. It is starred by Han Zaifen, the famous Anhui Huangmei opera artist and directed by Wang Yansong.

9 Shaoxing Opera Dowager Sh’e by Shaoxing Arts Academy

As one of the three Zhengjiang opera genres, Shaoxing opera has a history as long as three hundred years and with as many as four hundred repertoires. Through the long-term stage practice, it has developed an artistic style with sonorous and vehement voice, rough and unadorned music, bold and free performance and an artistic style which is well versed in both polite letters and martial arts. Shaoxing Opera is especially known for its unique plays of Wukong the Monkey King. Shaoxing Art Research Academy has enjoyed good reputation for its art strength, continually emerging stars and abundant repertoires. Shaoxing opera Dowager Sh’e is newly adapted from the historical story of Twelve Widows’ Western Expedition, played by both dan female-role and lao old-male-role players. Instead of following the old them of loyalty to the sovereign and serving the country , it presents the Dowager Sh’e’s sentiment to the war  after experiencing the death in battles of several generations of the men in Yang’s family. The opera won the New Drama Prize of the 12th Zhejiang Province Drama Festival. Leading actors and actresses are Shi Jiejing, Xue Feng and Ying Linfeng with music by Chen Shuntai.

10 Pingju Opera My Hulan River, My Eternal Homeland by Shenyang Pingju Opera Theater

The Pingju opera of My Hulan River, My Eternal Homeland is adapted from Fields of Life and Death and Tales of Hulan written by famous writer Xiao Hong. Its outstanding innovation and distinctive local features eulogize the unyielding national spirit. In terms of artistic expression, it integrates the organic essence of drama and dance into the traditional essence of Pingju opera. What is refreshing is the combination of its poetic recitation, lyrics and local opera, dance, drama and singing. The scenery is the winding Hulan River extending to the distance, carrying the fate of life and death and the hardship of war and blood, which is the soul of the opera. The production team includes Director Zha Mingzhe, Playwright Huang Weiying and leading actress Huang Yuping.
